In simple ideas and modes, real and nominal essence coincide, but in substances they always differ: for simple ideas and modes the abstract idea both is the being of the thing and the definition under the name, whereas in substances our nominal essence (the abstract complex idea used to name and sort) is distinct from the unknown real constitution on which their properties depend.
